Webisodes – At First Sight The
novel's lead character, Chick Best, does a series of video
confessionals (like many people do on YouTube.com). He sits in
front of his computer speaking to his web cam.
1st episode is humorous. Chick introduces himself and brags how he is a big dot com wizard, takes these great vacations to Hawaii and stays in the best hotels.
We
cut away from him at the computer to clips of his “homemade” video from
his Hawaii trip. His voiceover describes his wacky strategy in securing
the “right cabana.” On video, we also meet nagging Evelyn and
sullen Melissa.
2nd episode is a little more serious, but still has humor. On his computer web cam, Chick reintroduces himself and complains how he’s going broke thanks to his web biz diving and Evelyn spending his money.
He also claims she’s fooling around with her trainer. Chick brightens up when he talks about Paige Ellis. He shows us more of his homemade Hawaii video, this time, of her by the hotel pool. He rambles on about how perfect she is.
3rd episode is serious and somewhat disturbing. Chick reintroduces himself on his web cam and is clearly agitated. This time he shows us homemade videos of Paige with her husband Chandler (whom Chick despises) down by the hotel pool.
Via
his voiceover, we hear Chick’s manipulative and jealous side. He brags
about rescuing Paige from a shark, and how she should leave Chandler
for him. We see Chick and Evelyn dining with Paige and Chandler.
4th episode is off the wall. From his web cam at home, Chick mentions that Chandler has mysteriously died. He explains that he has to take a break from from his web cam to travel to the funeral and “comfort” Paige.
He
treats the funeral like a date or a cheap pick up. He’s confident
she’ll fall for him because he is successful, has material things, etc…
We see his fantasies spinning out of control.
5th episode features a clearly disturbed Chick. He is very nervous, and regrets posting these videos online. “What if they could be used as evidence?” he wonders aloud.
Chick
gets up from his computer, packs a gun and steps away from the
computer. A few beats and Stephen walks into frame on the web
cam. He says if you want to see what happens, read his new novel At
First Site.
