I recently wrote an article for Mahalo.com called How to Blow Out Your Blog. It’s an article for those who have already have a blog and want to trick it out. If you don’t have a blog yet, then first read my easy steps on How to Have a Blog.
A blog is a pre-built online web site which is frequently updated with new information and usually allows readers to leave comments. It can be everything from a personal online diary to a corporate update. Blogging is writing in one’s blog.
There are several types of blogging platforms out there: Moveable Type, Blogger, Blog Spot, Typepad, etc.. The best blog platform is Wordpress because it is very SEO friendly and has numerous plug ins available. Plug ins are special features that allow your blog to do extraordinary things.
Wordpress is an open source blogging platform, which means it’s free. Think of a platform as a pre-built web site, the skeleton, as it were. On top of the skeleton is the skin, or in blogging terms, the theme.
That’s what you’re looking at right now. The theme of this blog is rGrundge Magazine. There are numerous themes available for Wordpress.
There are two kinds of Wordpress: Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org. A Wordpress.com blog is hosted on the Wordpress.com site (like my old Wordpress.com blog here).
A Wordpress.org blog is hosted on your web site (like this one is hosted on my web site SanVicenteMedia.com) or is the entire web site itself (such as my other web site NewsVideoClip.TV.
You should get a Wordpress.org blog because you can add plug ins, place Goodle Adsense ads and, best of all, you get the traffic directly to your domain. This Wordpress blog parked on my domain helps the ranking of my web site.
On a Wordpress.com blog, Wordpress.com gets the traffic and they place their Google Adsense ads all at the expense of your work. Your domain gets no traffic.
The only good thing about Wordpress.com is that they host your blog for free, if you use a Wordpress.org blog, you do have to pay a hosting company, as you would to host any web site.
You can download Wordpress.org right here. It’s free and comes with a default theme.
You can find Wordpress themes all over the web, I listed a few sources in a previous blog entry: 4 Must-See Wordpress Theme Three Column SEO Blogs.
Plug ins can also be found all over the web via Google search and also via Wordpress.org web site.
Wordpress is pretty user friendly to set-up, but if you’re a novice you may want to get some help starting out. That is one of my services as a web content writer.
Here are two very good books on setting up a Wordpress blog:
